Maroon 5 raises $350,000 for Indiana State Fair victims

Maroon 5 have helped raise more than $350,000 to honor the victims of Saturday's stage collapse tragedy at the Indiana State Fair.

The band, along with touring partners Train, was due to perform at the fairground on Thursday, but the concert was relocated over safety fears following the weekend accident.

The gig took place at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis and the band pledged to donate all proceeds to the Indiana State Fair Remembrance Fund.

In a post on his Twitter page, frontman Adam Levine writes, "Everyone worked for free tonight in Indianapolis. We have already raised over $350,000 for those affected by the state fair tragedy. AMAZING."

Five people died and more than 40 others were injured when scaffolding and a lighting rig came crashing down during a sudden storm, shortly before country duo Sugarland was set to take the stage.

The country act also returned to the stage on Thursday night for the first time since the tragedy, and they paid respect to the victims by asking their audience in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a moment of silence.

The band, which is planning a private memorial for the victims in Indiana, states on its website, "This incredible machine is more than a tour and more than a set. We have always celebrated music as a healer. While music cannot change the events and losses at the Indiana State Fair, it can hopefully serve as a ritual and a balm to provide comfort and facilitate healing in this time of great sorrow."

Lady Gaga had 'no idea' she copied mermaid stunt
altText
Lady Gaga is adamant she did not copy Bette Midler's mermaid in a wheelchair performance, as she had "no idea" the veteran entertainer pulled a similar stunt 30 years before her.

Gaga performed at a show in Australia last week wearing a mermaid tail and sitting in a wheelchair - a move which led Midler to use Twitter to remind fans she came up with the gimmick way back in 1980.

Gaga has now spoken out to deny she had any idea Midler had beaten her in the originality stakes, telling Access Hollywood's Billy Bush, "I had no idea that she did that and I'm a huge Bette Midler fan.

"(It was) not (a Midler tribute) in the beginning... because I didn't know that she'd done (it), but I do now and I think it's great. Obviously I feel connected to women in theater and women from the past.

"Maybe we're just cut from the same cloth. I couldn't hop around in that tail so I just stuck myself in a wheelchair. All I'll say is that I... admire her and find her to be one of the most brilliant and incredible performers, so that's all I'll say."
